iPhone is not a smartphone, say analysts

January 29, 2007

This is not a surprise and I would agree with them. The Apple iPhone can’t be considered a full blown smartphone when it wont allow third party developers to create applications for it.

Third party developers (as any console gamer will know) are often the lifeblood of any device. That said even with Apple’s control freakery I doubt it will erode the success of the iPhone…

Whilst the coming iPhone may be an impressive, if expensive, iPod-capable mobile phone, it’s not a smartphone - no matter what Steve Jobs says. That’s according to analysts at ABI Research.

ABI Research’s definition of a smartphone is a cellular handset using an open, commercial operating system that supports third-party applications.

The main reason for this conclusion is that the iPhone is locked down to developers. Though it will sport a version of OS X, it almost certainly won’t be freely opened up to third-party software developers, and that’s the problem. Link

Blogger to WordPress

January 24, 2007

I moved from Blogger a while ago to the excellent WordPress and have constantly suggested others do the same. The main thing I find annoying about Blogger is the ridiculous amount of downtime you get. Some of my favourite blogs are unfortunately using the platform and recently there has been a torrent of non connections, pages not loading right or general lag in loading them up at all. None of this happens with WordPress. At least not in my experience.

Iain Dale is again showing his exasperation with the platform. In his comments I’ve made yet again the same suggestion: MOVE TO WORDPRESS!

C’mon, you know it makes sense, leave Blogger for the Google zealots and first time bloggers!

Second Life

January 22, 2007

Incredible. It makes me wonder, once we all have a Second Life what will we do with our first one?
